We believe that yoga is a way of life, but most importantly is the unity of mind, body and soul. The continuos practice of yoga brings balance and harmony to the daily life. In addition, the proper practice of asanas (posture) and pranayama (breath) can benefit the body tremendously by helping to heal injuries, reduce stress or simply achieve a healthier lifestyle.
Joy Torres is committed to serving and welcoming you at your starting point and offering you the support and services you need to reach your health goals.
Joy was introduced to yoga in 2005 and immediately felt its transformative powers. She experienced different styles of yoga such as Bikram, Anusara, Hatha and Vinyasa. As the years went by she grew stronger in her practice and noticed she had developed a real sense of peace and well-being. Joy began seriously practicing around 6 years ago and started to dive deeper into the Yogic lifestyle – Adopting a vegetarian diet and living her yoga on and off the mat. Her passion for yoga has led her to the art of sharing yoga with others.
A Lotus Gardens 200 Hour Certified Teacher, Joy’s style is unique and in her yoga class students at all levels of ability in their practice are honored for their differences, efforts and practice together in a safe yet challenging environment. Her classes are breath-centered and focused on alignment, strength, balance, and flexibility. Joy’s teaching style is influenced mainly by the classic poses of Hatha based Vinyasa yoga. Through her own experiences, she teaches with a compassionate heart, offering her students an opportunity to surrender themselves to experience the present moment.
Joy’s intuitive and kind spirit guides her to give each client a unique experience. Her primary Vinyasa teacher and mentor is Seane Corn with whom she continues her studies. Additionally, Joy’s background in gymnastics, dance and her continued commitment to training Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art, bring elements of strength to her classes. She also loves to travel, dance and practice acroyoga with her husband.
“Joy’s class has a subtle intensity that is very rare. Her unique style combines a soothing, gentle calmness with a deep focus on the core, while maximizing muscle strength and flexibility. She works from the inside out, so you feel like you are radiating afterward!” E.Kimbark – Fairfield, CT
“I had tried yoga at several different studios and with several different teachers but never really felt like I was benefitting or enjoying the practice. I was beginning to think I just didn’t like yoga. Then I met Joy. Her energy, spirit and style of teaching instantly changed my mind about yoga. I loved the pace of her classes, that she offered modifications for beginners and new challenges for those who were more experienced. She is one of the kindest people I know and is the best instructor I have had!” T. Rightmer – Wallingford, CT
“I am so grateful to have practiced with Joy for 6 months. She teaches based on the whole classes ability and energy level of the room, along with offering various levels of a pose based on each persons ability. More importantly she teaches you the correct posture, sometimes giving you micro-adjustments without judgement. She also strives to boost your confidence level to get you into poses you never thought possible. I walked out of each class I had with her feeling reenergized. The Austin yoga community is lucky to have her, which I’m sure her new students will quickly realize.” Melissa Baston – Cheshire, CT
“I unfortunately only got to practice with Joy for a little over a year. I had not been practicing that long and I loved Joy’s classes because even though I may not have been on the level that other of the yogis were she always made revisions so that I as a beginner was able to attempt the poses and be challenged just enough by them. She is truly a great teacher for students on all levels.” D. Hotham – Wallingford,CT
